Very Hidden vin number

I found this whilst prepping the rocker for weld-thru primer. this is on the inside of the pinch weld between the inner and outer rocker at the very bottom of the car. I’ve seen hidden vins under window rubbers and out of the way places that are at least in theory, a cc essable. No way to check this without advanced destructive testing.

And there’s a very good reason for that! We need the hidden VINs because some people try to cheat the system and use the wrong VINs on their car, to avoid them being reported as stolen or to be able to insure an otherwise uninsurable vehicle. But because some crooks aren’t smart, these ones can be found by investigators.

I’ve run into them from time to time but this is the most hidden one I’ve ever come across, and given the apparently high blood alcohol of the 1964 Chrysler employees who built this car I’m surprised they didn’t hit it with the spot welder given the inconsistent welding throughout.

I had to go through that registering the Pajero. NM requires a VIN inspection to title out of state vehicles for the first time, and among other things that requires physical verification in two locations. That gets interesting on a JDM import truck. After working through the fact that it doesn’t have VIN in North American sense and instead has only chassis number in a very different format and in exactly one place on the truck , I ultimately had to see a state police detective for a super secret level VIN inspection. She kept going in to check the database for all the places where the hidden VINs would be on a North American truck, and we kept coming up empty. Looked all over the place, pulled off some panels, and came up blank Evey time. Finally she just signed off on the form...

Pretty much. After about an hour I think she had other things to do than chase a second chassis number that doesn’t exist on some weird old, rhd diesel truck a nerdy car guy  imported.

I know I’ve mentioned it before, but its just because your project reminds me so much of what he’s going through on his ‘60 Plymouth, but the coldwarmotors guy discovered two structural supports on his Fury that were never welded in place at the factory and were just hanging loose rattling around for 50+ years. Amazing what things were like before robots.
